A rich green emerald, swathed in the translucent silk of the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is a small island of great beauty.
Named by the Dutch after Prince Maurice of Nassau, the island has since been occupied by the French and British before gaining independence in 1968. It is now a Republic within the British Commonwealth.
The official language and road signs are in English and driving is on the left but it's the French who have had the most influence with the cuisine... The best of both worlds!
